Our Fun Life

We had a friend visiting from NH from Thursday until Tuesday, so we were excellent tour guides and took her to some great spots while she was here. I was telling her how fortunate we feel to be able to live in such a beautiful spot, where we don't have to drive far (if at all) to enjoy the great outdoors. I remember saying that for some people, they have to plan for awhile to be able to do the things we do everyday and that we definitely don't take it for granted!
This week, we went to Earth Day at the college downtown, went on numerous hikes (Red Rock Canyon, Garden of the Gods, The Incline in Manitou Springs, hiked up & down the steps at Red Rocks Amphitheater-HAHA, etc), out to dinner at a local brewery, the hot springs in Buena Vista, out to a great lunch at a brewpub in Buena Vista, to South Park, Hoosier Pass/Alma, and gave her a little tour of downtown Denver.
Here are photos from her visit:

Videos of the boys

I have a ton of videos of the boys that I thought I would upload to the blog. I have tried in the past, but it never worked. My sister told me the other day the trick to getting them on here. Thanks so much, Mary!!!

End of April

I realized I haven't posted since we went to the baseball game about a week and a half ago, so thought I would do that tonight. I wish I could post a blog daily, so that I don't forget what we have done by the end of the week. I do know that we have been playing outside quite a bit, hiking even more, having friends in town, going to a concert, filling out paperwork for the new house, etc...
Some photos from the past 10 days...

Lochlan's First (of MANY) Baseball Games!

Although it wasn't a Red Sox game, Lochlan attended his first baseball game yesterday! We went up to Coors Field in downtown Denver and watched the Colorado Rockies versus New York Mets. The Mets are Matt's favorite team, so he was really excited to go see them in beautiful Denver. The weather was, as usual for Colorado, perfect and amazing. We had to load on the sunblock and Lochlan wore his little Red Sox cap to keep protected from the sun.
On the drive up, Matt told me that he has never seen the Mets win while he's been live at a game. He thought he was jinxing them, but he proved that theory wrong yesterday, as they beat the Rockies 5-0. We had excellent seats, 5 rows up from the field, and on the visitor's side, so Matt got to see all of his players just a few yards away.
After the game, we went to our friends, Craig and Karen's house for dinner out in Lakewood. They have two daughters (age 3 1/2 and 7), and the girls always like having Lochlan come over. We ate some dinner and played outside for awhile in their park-like backyard, then headed home. It was a great day!
Now we're trying to get back to Coors Field in June for the Red Sox games. The tickets are a lot more expensive for those games, so we might not be able to go, but wish us luck!

Spring Has Sprung!

With temperatures hovering around the 60's & 70's for the past month or so (besides the occasional inch or two of snow that showed up once or twice), we definitely are heading into a great spring!
I read a book last month recommended to me by my friend Kelly called Last Child in the Woods: Saving our children from nature-deficit disorder by Richard Louv. It is wild to compare children that don't play outside versus children that do. There is such a huge difference, and the book talks about the evidence linking the lack of nature in children's lives and the rise in obesity, attention disorders and depression. We make sure Gavin is playing outside the majority of the day when he is here, as we notice a huge change in him after he is outside. Lochlan is a lucky boy and has been outside constantly practically since birth, and I'm sure when he starts talking, he'll be able to recognize the wind blowing on his cheeks, the bright sun in his eyes, the sounds of birds chirping, grass blowing in the wind, trees creaking in the woods, water running in a creek, etc. Kelly's son, Coen, hates the wind and he says the cutest things about it on windy days. Just the fact that he can recognize the wind blowing on his cheeks at the age of two is becoming less and less common in children now. The author's most memorable quote by a child comes from a fourth-grader in San Diego who stated, "I like to play indoors better 'cause that's where all the electrical outlets are". This is such an innocent statement of a growing epidemic in children today.
We have been hiking most of the winter and outside as much as possible with the kids. They might be the "uncool" kids someday who don't sit around watching tv, playing on the computer, and playing video games at our house, but we just have to keep doing what we feel is right while raising them.
Over the past week, we have been busy with the home we have put under contract, going on lots of hikes, to playgroups, to the parks, mommy/baby yoga at the YMCA, having a huge yard sale, playing outside with the dogs, going to Stroller Strides for the first time (contrary to what it sounds like, it's a kick-ass workout, which I need!), building a Pottery Barn knock-off coffee table, playing with our seeds that are sprouting, making good meals, dancing with the kids, praising Lochlan for successful potty eliminations (almost daily), watching the Red Sox and Mets baseball games.
Here are some photos I've taken over the past week.

He had to stop playing with his pail & shovel in the dirt to watch the train go by, of course!
